SEQUIN

In the world of electro-pop, the music is prone to being geographically identifiable. Sequin’s world, in contrast, has a different dimension, cutting across sonic cultures. She can sing "Beijing" to us while sounding as if she were from Ladytron’s England and she can give us a glimpse of India while drawing on Afrobeat. Most especially, she is able to make us forget about the cold weather by refreshing us with her linen-like voice. Cooler materials feel better on everyone when Sequin makes herself heard. Let’s make a declaration of intentions that would do justice to a lazy afternoon by the pool with this soundtrack playing in the background: clothes which can be worn lightly and a bikini that just wants to dance.

NOVEDADES CARMINHA

Novedades Carminha are back with a new studio album – and they haven’t lost the tiniest bit of their freshness and youthful irreverence. Sensitive but laddish, “Juventud Infinita” (Ernie Records, 2014) shows a move towards musical terrain where the power of lo-fi garage rock combines with catchy pop hooks, with a dash of psychodelia and punk for good measure. This band from Galicia has taken a big step forward with this new album, adopting a more careful sonic approach and putting together songs which are bursting with creativity and dynamism. But they haven’t compromised in terms of their identity, the things that have got them this far. This is most definitely their most widely anticipated album, with the band now having established themselves on the Spanish indie scene. This is all thanks to their fun and compelling live performances and a good number of timeless generational anthems. 2014 could be a big year for Novedades Carminha.

MALANDRÓMEDA

Introductions are boring, so let’s skip talking about the career of these extraterrestrials, their side projects such as Fluzo, Juanito Broders and Nonresidentz, and their three previous albums. Let’s focus on what Malandrómeda are doing today, their new music and this great preview of the new album they are working on. It’s simpler, dirtier, and for people who want to move their bodies and shake their minds up without distinguishing between good and bad. It’s another turn of the screw from these two fans of a good churrasco. It smells of rock ‘n’ roll, but they learnt their rock from Black Elvis. Athletic rapping, up and down, rhythmic mastery, word play, and qué carallo, the lyrics are funnier than ever.

Their live performances are energetic, fun and they leave the door open to outside influences and experimentation. Pump up the bass and let the delay ring out. Each gig is a Malandromic party, with rap you want to dance to.
